i’m 75% done with the kitchen!

wow! thanks for all the warm “welcome back’s” i got from everyone! it’s nice to be missed. i tried to get caught up on a few of your blogs. i managed to read a few, but it’s amazing how fast time flies for me lately. especially when you waste a LOT of your day on facebook. :oX

you will never guess! i finally started the final painting on my kitchen cabinets! last june i painted the tops of my cabinets white. i debated on whether to paint the bottoms white to match or a contrasting color for months. not to mention i was lazy. that’s a huge job and i had no interest in starting. but something inspired me and i got busy on tuesday. i primed and painted. and i hated the color. it was a nice beige, but on the cabinets it looked pink. ugh! so yesterday i painted again. this time i used the leftover paint from what i used on the walls in the upstairs bathroom (i used that paint because it was the only one i had in a semi-gloss!). anyhooo…. i love how it came out. here’s a little photo journal of how we started and where we ended up:

this is the kitchen when we bought the house. yeah…looking at these photos, i’m not sure WHAT drew us to this house. booooooring. i put carrots to work almost immediately.

first, the room got about 4 coats of red paint.

then we replaced the ugly, ugly light fixtures.

then carrots added molding to the tops of the cabinets. if i could redo this part a little, i would…i’d have him add an extra inch or two before the molding… but oh well!

then i painted the tops off –white

but not before adding a funny something-or-other to the door fronts.

we put down laminate over the horrible vinyl floor.

ahhh! it’s getting better!

we replaced the faucet… ew. the paint job under that counter isn’t so cute. i’ve since fixed it, i’m happy to say.june 13 009

here’s what the kitchen looks like today:

i LOVE it.

sure, i’d love new counters. a new sink. a new dishwasher (of which i WILL be getting!). but for as little as we spent? i think it looks like a million bucks compared to what it started as. now. i have to start the OTHER side of the room! lol most people take photos of when they are done. not me. i still have to paint the other side of the kitchen. well, just the bottoms. :o) i’ll have that done today. i think. i hope. well, i’m gonna try.

The colour is great! I think it helps your black and white dishwasher blend better than either white or black would have. Your kitchen looks lovely!

Absolutely LOVE it! What a transformation. I'm jealous! Our cabinets need some serious help but I just don't feel like doing it myself! Maybe it's cause I too spend waaaaayyy too much time on facebook;)

Oh its GORGEOUS. I LOVE the sideboard next to the door, and the wreath, it looks so inviting! Im in the midst of TRYING to do something with our UGLY kitchen without taking down the "bathroom" tile the last owners put in..we havent figured out how to cover it yet...our friend who is a contractor said taking it down would be more trouble than its worth. Love your blog!

It looks wonderful! I am trying to work up the nerve to paint some of my cabinets. Did you have to sand first? What kind of paint did you use? I would love a "tutorial" post!

And welcome back!

So are you going to give any painting tips? Painting the kitchen cabinets is at the top of my summer to-do list.

Hey girl! Just wanted to say how much I love the cabinet update! The molding on top is really great...the paint makes such a difference too. :)

OK, this is totally random, but a long time ago I saved your post about recovering your office chair to copy Ballard's. I am thinking about doing something similar for my husband's chair but was wondering about your process. Did you basically just staple gun the fabric on the underside? Or maybe you had to sew some parts to make it fit? Is there any chance you would share your secrets with me? No pressure...I know that painting kitchen cabinets can be rather time consuming! :)

Thanks Marie!
